Oak Cross, 100% Malt Whisky, Compass Box Bottling, (10 yrs) 43%.
Color: Dessert wine. Nose: Citrus fruits, cloves, vanilla, creamy, malty. Taste: Quite nice actually with some fruity notes, grappa, slightly peppery and spicy, some nice creamy notes on top of it with vanilla again. Slightly smoky in the background as well. Aftertaste: Medium long aftertaste with some nice developments of oak, vanilla and soft summer fruits. Score: 83. Remarks: Very nice for a vatted malt! Looking forward in tasting more Compass Box whiskies! Price vs. quality is very good.

2 Caol Ila's

Caol Ila, Signatory Vintage, 11 yrs (1996-2007), 43%, 769 bottles.
Color: White wine. Nose: Slightly ammonia, rubbery, seaweed, briny, salty, inner tubes of bicycle tires, glue. Taste: Strong stuff, very peppery start, smoky with some medicinal notes. Sweetish with cream but sour with apples. Strange combination though. Overall lighter then expected. Aftertaste: Slightly smoky, not that long as you would expect from the nose, quite an unusual acidic aftertaste with sour apples and sweets. Score: 79. Remarks: A bit disappointing I must admit. But still way above average!

Caol Ila, Signatory Vintage, Unchillfiltered Collection, 10 yrs (1998-2008), 46%, 849 bottles.
Color: Applejuice. Nose: There's more in this glass then there was in the previous one. Will the 46% matter that much? Wet rocks near the ocean, flowery, roses, some salt, some pepper, dutch liquorice, wet earth, citrusfruits as well. Taste: Smoky explosions, stronger then the first Caol Ila, it tastes more like tar, well bodied with medicinal notes and lot's of pepper! Aftertaste: Strong lasting finish with some peaty notes, very warming, some nice liquorice at the end to finish this example of how a Caol Ila should be. Score: 85. Remarks: Can I have another one of this? Yes, the one at 46% please.

3 Highland Parks

Highland Park, Secret Treasures, 16 yrs, 44%, Single Cask, bottle 298 of 342.
Color: Dark gold. Nose: Heather, caramel, orange-marmelade, very old sherry, quite nice actually. Taste: Fresh start, a bit spicy, some pepper, orange marmelade again, heather, honey, liquorice. Quite bold and sweet, warming. Aftertaste: Very long and complex with spices, sherrywood, some creamy smoke in the background. Score: 89. Remarks: The best HP I have tasted. Bottle is empty now, will be hard to find one again...

Highland Park, Alchemist, 15 yrs, 46%.
Color: White wine. Nose: Flowers, heather, leaves of fall, farmyardy. Taste: Again a complex HP, smoky, salty with some sherrywood, slightly spicy, nutty, sweet, very warming indeed. Aftertaste: Medium long with some liquorice, sweet sherry and slightly smoky. Pleasantly sweet. Score: 82. Remarks: Good newcomer!

Highland Park, 18 yrs, OB, 43%.
Color: Dark gold. Nose: Sherry, caramel, the cheap ones, a box of chocolates, musty, heather but more bold this time, sour-sweet liquorice. More musty on the nose then the other two. Not my cup of tea... Taste: Develops on sour sweet liquorice, caramel, lemon-peel, green apples, some pepper and again musty and dusty. Aftertaste: Long but too much sweet-sour for my tastebuds. Perhaps a one-off bad cask that was used for this one? Or I do not like HP's that are older then 16 yrs... Score: 78. Remarks: I should buy another bottle and re-rate it again, just to be sure.

Glenrothes Vintage 1992

Glenrothes Vintage 1992, 12 yrs, 43%
Color: White wine. Nose: Heather, honey, biscuits with marmelade, fruity, plum-compote, red berries.Taste: Plums, sweet berries, warm dark fruits, some salt as well, a bit spicy with some nice liquorice. Aftertaste: Medium aftertaste with liquorice, fruity, some sherrynotes, grassy and fresh. Sweet soft caramels and some oakiness as well. Score: 83. Remarks: A nice Glenrothes, subtle and sweet.

Jura 10 + Jura Special Edition

Isle of Jura 10 yrs, 40%, 2007
Color: Gold. Nose: Malty, wet plants, earthy, heathery, rope, porridge.Taste: Malty, some salt, smoky but sweet, liquorice, creamy, some sherry influences as well... Aftertaste: A long aftertaste. Sweet and creamy, some sherry again with liquorice and some smoke in the background. Nice one. Better then the Juras of some years ago.Score: 85. Remarks: Still one of my favorite every-day-drams.

Isle of Jura Special Edition, 43%
Color: Light gold. Nose: A bit more Oomph, boldness with some oily influences, gasoline, sherry, overall a bit dusty and musty. Taste: Sour, a bit unpleasant, clearly oranges, a wif of smoky and overall very sweet. Cheap nougat, some clove in there as well. Quite typical to taste that... Aftertaste: Short with clove and a bittersweet finale, brown sugar, caramel and fudge. Not the Jura I was expecting. What do you mean "Special Edition"?Score: 78. Remarks: Not my kind of dram, sorry.

Glen Scotia 7 yrs - Single Cask

Glen Scotia, Heavily Peated, Single Cask Bottling, O.B., 45%.

Cask no. 525, n.c.f. / n.c.
Bottle 168 of 330.

Color: Applejuice.
Nose: Peaty soil after a rainstorm. Wet rocks in a stream through the highland-wilderness. Black peppers.
Taste: Peppery and hot! Suddenly some nice sweet notes arise... with smoke and again some peat, but less heavy now. Slightly spicy also, aniseed with some nice sweet liquorice.
Aftertaste: Peaty with a very strong and peppery middle, grips and rips but escapes quite quickly... leaving a small film of pepperish peat in your mouth behind. It could have been so much more... but well, I'm not complaining now.
Score: 88.
Remarks: Very good price - quality level.
Bought it for less then 35 euros in The Netherlands.

Glenfarclas 10 yrs

Glenfarclas 10 yrs, O.B., 40%

Color: Light Gold.
Nose: Slightly spicy, dusty with heather on a sunny day. Some smoke and white pepper. In the back some slightly notes of metal.
Taste: Smoky with hints of sherry, quite spicy and full. The first approach of this Glenfarclas is quite powerfull but it leaves you behind with an elegant smile of pleasure.
Aftertaste: Rather long for such a young edition of the Glenfarclas stable. Quite warm and smoky, well balanced! Fresh spices, somewhat dry and smoky... just as I like it.
Score: 85. (same score as one year earlier)
Remarks: Already bought 3 bottles and all are empty. Enough marketing-talk for me... to be honest!

Glen Storn 12 - Unknown

Glen Storn, 12 yrs, 40%, Highland Single Malt.
Unkwown history or bottler.

Color: Gold.
Nose: Just printed magazines. The ink is overwhelming. Dusty copper stills, the ones who have not been running for quite some years... Not very promising.
Taste: Starts like water and than all kinds of flavours, most of them remain questionmarks in my book, fighting for a good seat at the front row but nobody gets there, So is the taste, it's going nowhere. Rusty water is the only taste I can really describe now.
Aftertaste: Medium aftertaste though! Lots of mixed up flavours that remain unknown to my skills of tasting. Some metals, copper and rust - that's all really.
Score: 55.
Remarks: Bought this bottle in Sauerland (Germany) for only 15 euros. It was worth the try! After all, it could have been so much more!

Glen Ord 12 yrs

Color: Dark gold.
Nose: Honey and heather, wooden matches, manure, some slight sherry tones in the background, black soil.
Taste: Quite creamy with honey, thick cream that develops on sweet juicy spices. interesting whisky, no doubt. Some toffee to finish it off.
Aftertaste: Medium long with sweet smoke, some sherry notes and oak, spicy and sweet.
Score: 82.
Remarks: No remarks at all. A good reasonable priced whisky for every day.

Nikka White - Pure Malt

Nikka White, Pure Malt, 43%

Color: Gold, slightly orange.
Nose: Wet bark, sawdust, something lightly peated, smoky is a better word for it, some dark orangie sherry notes in the back.
Taste: Liquorice, smoky, quite sweet, burning peat in the back, slowly building up some peppery notes... quite a bitter finale. Where is the promised peat?
Aftertaste: A bitterness best described as "a good try... but this isn't a single malt!" A pure malt in every way. The smoke has gone for a walk and leaves you behind with sweet, soft woody tones of unknown bitterness... How about the Black version?
Score: 70.
Remarks: The nose is much more fun than tasting it. Isn't that the case with most vatted malts?

Linkwood 13 + Mortlach 14, Signatory

Two bottles in a tin can from Signatory Vintage. I bought them at Van Wees in Amersfoort, some hours before my last Nosing & Tasting... Both are matured on a sherry cask. This tin with two Single Malts costed me 12 euros.

Linkwood, 1991-2004 (±13 yrs), 43%

Color: Gold with an orange edge.
Nose: Perfume, heather, quite metal, an old wet cloth to dry your dishes with, berries and yogurt.
Taste: Very, very dry... a sharp edge in the middle, heather again with some liquorice, sweet with some spoons of honey.
Aftertaste: Sweet but very short. Develops shortly on heather and honey. Nothing dry in there anymore... A bit awkward after the promising nose.
Score: 76.
Remarks: Would'nt buy this bottle to be honest. Try to find the Linkwood of Diageo, 12 yrs, that one is a lot better when it comes down to price and quality...

Mortlach, 1990-2004 (±14 yrs), 43%

Color: Light orange it is.
Nose: Nosed this whisky for nearly half an hour and whilst leaving the glass at it's own... more flavours came across. Started on rucola salad, some salty notes, like a cheap smoked salmon, heathery notes, something meaty as well (dried salami), sour directly on the nose... quite extraordinary... As we are used to from this exceptional distillery...
Taste: Bitter and dry, a sweet sour film on your tongue... gets even dryer... salted meat, some dark berries in the back... bitterness, dark chocolat coffeebeans, sour-sweet, warming...
Aftertaste: dry and bittersweet, medium length, some creamy notes in the back, strawberry yogurt, on the very outskirts some salty notes as well, is that the meat that returns? A very complex Mortlach as we are used to from this very good distillery.
Score: 85.
Remarks: A nice Mortlach. Worth buying the whole bottle? Yes it does pay off!

Linlithgow - 24 yrs (1982)

Cognac Cask (Mission Range)

Color: Light Gold.
Nose: Sweet, vanilla, soup-herbs, home made tortellini.
Taste: This one bites a lot... Ah, quite nice, develops on some smoky notes with liquorice, spices and vanilla. Quite bitter taste in there as well. Black chocolates with spices again...
Aftertaste: Quite long. A full bodied whisky! Sweet, creamy, smoky, really nice. Reminds me of a Rosebank... and that's always good news!
Score: 95.
Remarks: A downside to this great bottle is it's price... This Linlithgow sells for around 120 euros. I would then rather buy 2 bottles of Rosebank I'm afraid.

Isle of Jura - Special Edition

Isle of Jura, Special Edition, 10-14 yrs (vatted), 43%

Color: Dark Gold.
Nose: Sherrynotes, sweet smoke, sulphur, wet sails, orange marmelade.
Taste: Sweetened and burnt nuts, creamy, oily, oranges again.
Leaves behind a veru thin film with honey and roasted nuts, quite interesting I must admit.
Aftertaste: Medium aftertaste on oranges, marmelade, caramel and liquorice. Intense and creamy, sugary notes and a lot of honey. Great one as an after-dinner dram.
Score: 86.
Remarks: Now I got 8 completely different Jura's...
A great Adventure I'd say!

Mortlach 16 - Scott's Selection

Mortlach 16 yrs, 1990-2007, 56%

Color: Chenin Blanc.
Nose: Red fruits and berries, smoky tones as well, dry leaves of green bushes... (sorry I'm Dutch...) this is going to be something very nice... on the nose that is. Earth and smoke, slightly medicinal...
Taste: Fruity, smoky and quite peppery. Some seasalt comes in, in the middle, the spirit becomes dryer, softer, some caramels, expensive chocolates, deliciouss!
Aftertaste: Dark dried fruits, berries, sweet like candy, quite a short finish... Pleasant anyway!
Score: 92.
Remarks: Mortlach is one of my favorites... This one get's quite close to the Port Finish...

Benriach Arumaticus Famosus - OB

Color: Light gold.
Nose: Ammonia, sweet, vanilla, some seasalt. candy.
Taste: Soft and sweet with marshmellows.
Aftertaste: Very flat aftertaste on some very strange notes... what is it... is this whisky? I think Benriach has "overdone" it with this one... Match it up against the Benriach Curiositas (which I gave 95 points once) and that on is much bigger, that ones leaves a signature behind... Was it my taste at that very moment or is this Benriach really dreadfull? So flat without any particular note on the palate... Show me I'm wrong, please!
Score: 65.

Bladnoch 15 - Cows label

Bladnoch 15 yrs, OB, miniature Cows-label, 55%

Color: Sweet white whine.
Nose: Wet rocks, some peat dripped in here as well. Heather again (typical for Bladnochs? or am I typical?) I'm getting some Port-like notes... What barrel was used for this? Quite peppery on the nose, don't stay to lang with your nose in that glass, plastics, rubbers..., some flowers in there as well. Very particular nose. But nice. Like meeting your best family if this is your like...
Taste: Develops on something peppery and dry. Gets dryer and dryer with roses and sweet tannines of bitter chocolate. Quite nice! A real surprise after the nose. I learned already that Bladnoch makes quite exceptional whiskies... this one is surely a good buy. Will it be still available? Raymond Armstrong (the manager) slipped this bottle in my pocket and told me: "This is one to enjoy for yourself", so who knows?
Aftertaste: Same development, but gets dryer more quickly. A sudden death is constructed with some rose-leaves and bitterness. Very nice Bladnoch, again!
Score: 91.
Remarks: Raymond..., I would love to taste this one at 18 or 21 yrs! Is it available?

Bladnoch 13 - OB

Color: Light gold.
Nose: Heather, sweet honey, some smoke in the back, sweet berries.
Taste: Sets of with quite a peppery start, growing bigger every second... black pepper so quite softer than normally... Develops on sweet-sour notes. The wood struggles to get come closer. it's being pushed away by some sour-notes... bit rubberu with some very strange wood-influences. Should try this one a second time... Oh wait... It's the fourth time I try this one... Strange. Quite warm at the end as if the warm sweet berrie stake control at the end. Quite complex this one. But nice!
Aftertaste: Slightly smoky, peppers, heather, honey, leather, gets dry, not to much though, keeps quite warm and satisfying. A mellow glow in the background of an unique Lowland whisky!
Score: 85.

Bladnoch 18 - Bourbon Finish

Color: Light gold.
Nose: More sweet and soft as the 13 yr old... Slightly some wood in the middle, vanilla and quite some soft herbs. Delicate sensations.
Taste: Quite peppery though, soft herbs and pepper, a strange mixture...
Aftertaste: Quit full bodied. Sharp on pepper and a whisper of salt in the back. Gets quite bitter whilst getting closer to the end... which is pretty dominated by chocolate and fudge.
Score: 87.

Bladnoch 6 - OB Sherry Finish

Color: Dark brown.
Nose: Quite woody and with a typical sharp bitterness. Sherry notes on the palate as well. Sweet overtones in the back.
Taste: Woody, sherry-notes, dark chocolate, pralines, quite exceptional.
Aftertaste: Warm and sweet with vanilla notes, woody and compact. Quite a sour end to all this beautifull. Finish mostly on old sherry-notes. Was that "old" really necessary?
Score: 89.

Bladnoch 6 - OB Lightly peated

Color: Light white whine.
Nose: Pretty heavy peat. Full and warm, spicy with herbs, something sweet on top of it...
Taste: This Bladnoch is completely like all others... it takes hold off you and won't let go that fast... You try to resist, but it does'nt work. One to discover. Over and over again...
Aftertaste: Soft and very sweet warm peat. Subtle herbs with some honey in the back. Very nice made.
Score: 85.
Remarks: No time to leave yet... Let's stay for a while.

Tullibardine 16 - Daily Dram

Color: Light yellow.
Nose: Some peppery notes, flowerish, lemonpeels, dusty, glue, a little edge with ammonia.
Taste: Sweet but hot and spicy as well. Not on spices... creamy middle with vanilla and yogurt?
Aftertaste: Medium long, spicy...
Score: 80.
Remarks: A remarkable whisky, no doubt about that.

Kilchoman Optic

Color: Teawater...?
Nose: I must apologise up front of my language but there's mo better way of telling you this... F**ck, this is really peaty! Nothing like the Port Charlotte, this is great stuff. I'm spilling it on my blouse... what a waste...
Taste: This is how some freshly cut peatreeks taste... Start quite warm and mellow but then develops into something beyond this world. Enter the world of peat! They should print that on the label... just as a warning. All crevasses in your mouth are filled with this raw peat-taste.
Aftertaste: Are you having a gum-infection in your mouth? No, not at all I just took some zips from a glass of Kilchoman. Aftertaste is very short but burny like hell... and that's where this peatmachine came from. No doubt about that!
Score: 85.
Remarks: Not for sale yet. As far as I know...

Miltonduff + Imperial - Daily Dram

Tasting two Daily Dram bottlings in the church:

1) Mille Tonnes D'oeufs (Miltonduff), 8 yrs, 46%

Color: Chenin blanc (white whine).
Nose: Oh, this is just the best I nosed today! Roses and flowers... Give me some more! Reminds me of a great Rosebank... that's good news in my opinion. Let it be for a while they said behind the stand... oh yes I will do that every time I poor this in one of my glasses. (Bought the bottle directly after tasting it... and truly that's the first time around!) Only for the nose you should buy this bottle. Develops on apples, citrusfruits, cactus, melon and apple peel. I think I never nosed such a great whisky... Please: whatever you do... nose this great bottle!
Taste: Soft water with roses. Sparkling. Sweet herbs and spices, and some vanilla in the middle. Teaspoon of pepper in the back. This is great stuff!
Aftertaste: Medium long finish with fresh citruslike herbs and roseleaves...
Score: 95.
Remarks: Not so expensive if you might think. Only 33 euros. I would really like to try this one at cask strength sometime... The score might be even higher I'm guessing...

2nd tasting: Still the same as the above, even a whole week later... Very nice made whisky!
Score: 95.

2) Lime Pair (Imperial), 11 yrs, 46%

Color: Light applejuice.
Nose: Granny Smith's apples, soft and sweet, sour, toilets, dried fruits and some citrus notes.
Taste: Sweet and soft but quite spicy and hot. Really rippes your gums... Sweetness becomes heather.
Aftertaste: Sweet, apples and pears. Citrussy peels all over the place.
Score: 75.

Glenfarclas 41 - Daily Dram

Feral Clangs (Glenfarclas), 41 yrs, 45.7%

Color: Medium gold.
Nose: Vanilla, dried fruits, taste likes a lowlander. Very subtle fruits and herbs.
Taste: Soft and sweet. This can't be a Glenfarclas... where's the dominant Sherry influence? Sorry? It's because it matured on "bourbon" wood? Finally!
Aftertaste: Very fresh from the beginning onwards. No sherry or smoke influences are 'that' necessary to create a great allround whisky.
Score: 85.
Remarks: Unfortunately it costs like 190 euros... Aren't there any cheaper bourbon barrels available for the less fortunate whiskyenthousiasts among us?

North Port 23 - Scott's Selection

Color: Light gold.
Nose: Nettles, dusty like an old book... A brick wall, the smell of a church in winter time. Some feinty hints take control of my eyes... small tears are the result.
Taste: What a nice and heavy start. That looks promising... Peppery notes with great spices. Some heather and honey in the middle as well. Quite soft if I may say so. I never tried this brand before... why didn't I?
Aftertaste: Medium long finish on pepper and honey.
Score: 85.

Rosebank 16 - Gordon & MacPhail

Color: Dark gold
Nose: Roses, there they are again! Quite a dozen of those... Woody hints as well.
Taste: Quite full with wood and sherry hints. Quite sharp in the middle, not as I am used with Rosebank... strange...! The wood takes a step forwards, too much in my opinion. Where is the flowerish Rosebank gone to?
Aftertaste: Soft, wet cardboard..., slightly salty?
Score: 78.

Rosebank 17 - Clydesdale

Color: White wine
Nose: Oak and wood, soft herbs, some nice spices.
Taste: Slightly pepper, sweet, vanilla, oaky in the middle. Soft and Light.
Aftertaste: Sweet and soft. Some salt liquorice in there as well... quite long!
Does'nt taste like a Cask Strength to me... more like a very soft and delicate Speysider.
Score: 80.

Whisky in the Church

From now on I am sort of forced to write my blog in English. Mostly because of all the people I know in this great industry. Sharing my thoughts with them is only possible like this... My feelings now go out to Raymond and his wife (owners) of the Bladnoch Distillery. I sent him an e-mail for some brochures of the 13 yrs old, for my club... what I got was a bottle of new make spirit. Something quite unique! (Visit my tasting on July 12 for that please.)

These photo's are taken at the event "Whisky in the Church", a nosing & tasting by invitation of Aad van Zuylen and Jean-Marie Putz only (malt maniacs and true connoisseurs ((like me? Oh yeah!)). I have had a great time in Loosduinen that day and I sincerely hope that next year I'll be part of it again... Perhaps behind your stand Raymond? You know where to find me!

Port Charlotte 6 (2001)

PCB 6, 2001, 61,6%, 68,95

Kleur: Lichtgoud
Neus: Aarde, natte rotsen en turf. Wat houtigs in de achtergrond, maar
waar komt dat vandaan? Dit is een jonge whisky... Benzinelucht, een
bezoekje aan het tankstation. Daarna rubber en iets kwark-achtigs.
Smaak: Medicinale tonen en turf voeren de boventoon. Gaat erg diep
alsof je brandende turf in het glas hebt geschonken. Wordt even later zoeter
en zachter. Marshmellows, zwavel en licht zurig.
Afdronk: Nog nooit heb ik vloeibare pure turf mogen proeven... wat een sensatie!
Islay op en top maar met een bijzonder zoet einde met heide, honing en romigheid.
Score: 9.5 uit 10.

Rosebank 15 - Dun Bheagan

Neus: Rozen, bloemig, heide, snufje honing, een natte regenjas.
Smaak: Witte peper, rokerig en droog. Licht fruitig, of zijn het bloemen?
Tikje hard in het midden maar daarna vanilletonen en opnieuw zachte rook.
Afdronk: Zurig maar met rode peper. Vanille, rook en heide. Gepeperde bloemen
geven de afdronk een licht drogend karakter. Eén om van te genieten... vandaag,
morgen en overmorgen... Een absolute reden om Malt Maniac ambities te hebben!

Kleur: lichtgeel met een groen randje.
Neus: mout, graan, ananas en hooi. Aarde, bloemig, iets citrus
tinner en terpentine, zuurtjes en later wat fudge.
Smaak: Prikkelend, tikkeltje rook merkbaar. Scherp citrusfruit,
aarde en varens maar ook vanille en fudge.
Afdronk: medium afdronk met moutige tonen. Wat honing en
zoetigheid als zuurstokjes. Vrij droog met een mespuntje peper?

Isle of Jura Legacy, 10 yrs, 40%, 33,95

Kleur: donker oranje.
Neus: sinaasappel- en citroenschillen. Citrusfruit, afwasmiddel.
Een stoffig boek bij de antiquair. Muf. Boterbloemen, engelse drop.
Smaak: Prikkelender dan de standaard 10 botteling. Bittere chocolade,
nougat, warme kersen, sinaasappels, gebladerte en dennengroen.
Afdronk: medium spiritus-achtige afdronk. Vettig en moutig. Zeep.
Mandarijntjes. Kaarsvet. Goedkope chocolade en likeurbonbons.

Kleur: donkergoud.
Neus: leidingwater, muffig, potgrond, turfachtig. Vol, gebakken koekjes,
hout, rozijnen, grootmoeders appeltaart.
Smaak: Licht rokerig, warm en zacht. Romige aarbeienkwark.
Kastanjes, eikeltjeskoffie, beukennootjes. Een licht bittertje.
Honing en houtskool.
Afdronk: een lekkere volle afdronk, medium. Vrij zoet als strudel,
verse appeltaart, sinaasappelschil en krenten. Wrang en zurig op 't eind.

Isle of Jura, 16 yrs, 40%, 36,95

Kleur: vol goud.
Neus: zwavelachtig, licht bloemig, kalkwater. Heide, roomtoffee's,
rozijnen, appeltjes en sinaasappel. Lichte turftonen, fruitig.
Zoete popcorn, meidoorn.
Smaak: houtig met sinaasappels, warm en vol, chocolade-cake,
bitterkoekjes, walnoten en dadels. Lekker verwarmend.
Afdronk: vrij korte afdronk maar met mooi gevulde smaken van
caramel en toffee's met warm fruit, cashew en pecannoten, cassata.
Prettig bittertje blijft wel lang hangen. Sinaasappels keren nog even terug.

Isle of Jura, 21 yrs, 40%, 65,95

Kleur: amber, teakhout.
Neus: romig en zoetig. Vettig. Fudge en kruidige ontbijtkoek.
Zacht zoetig fruit, sinaasappelschil.
Smaak: vrij scherp, maar vol en warm. Zoetig als snoepgoed,
zuurstokjes, sinaasappel, bonbons, calvados, eikenhout,
appels en peren, honing, verwarmend.
Afdronk: begint prachtig met caramel en warme kersensaus,
maar stort daarna vrij snel in. Zoetige romigheid blijft wel net
genoeg hangen om een prettige afdronk te bewerkstelligen.

Isle of Jura, 1999, Heavily Peated, 58%, 40 PPM, 43,95

Kleur: dry sherry.
Neus: alcohol, turf, velpon, beits, chloor als in een zwembad.
Schoensmeer, varens, peperig (met extra water: nat toiletpapier).
Smaak: de turf knijpt heftig in je tandvlees! Medicinaal zonder enige
twijfel. Anijszaad, zoethout, teer en rubber banden. Deze whisky is
"kauwbaar" alsof je bubblegum eet... met peper en groene planten.
Afdronk: vrij vol en zeer lang.Zoetig, zuurstokjes, tum-tum.
Overall net iets te zoet waardoor de turf wat achterop raakt.
Peperige kruiden blijven lang hangen.

Isle of Jura, 13-09-2002, Cask Strength,
cask: 1124, Bottle 365 / 705, 58,8%, 66,95
3 tot 5 jaar oude Jura gemixt met geturfde Jura's uit de jaren 70.
Originele distilleerderijbotteling, geblend door Richard Paterson.
Afwijkend etiket en fles. Moeilijk verkrijgbaar. Gekocht in België.

Kleur: chenin blanc.
Neus: simson bandenplak lijm, synthetische boterlak, zoutige turf,
weeige bloemen, ver in de achtergrond ook bittere noten en zoetig fruit.
Smaak: heftige maar kleine explosies van peper, teer en turf volgen elkaar
heel snel op. Granny-smith appelschillen, peperige kruiden en citrusfruit,
heide, geperste citroenen, houtig, de rubberen lijm keert ook weer terug.
Afdronk: heel erg lang met een scherpe droogheid. Exotische vruchten,
grapefruit, as en bloemig, rozenblaadjes, zachte en zoete turf maken deze
whisky helemaal compleet. Een krachtpatser van ongekende kwaliteit!

Isle of Jura - Superstition

Kleur: Donker Oranje
Neus: Sherry, lichte hint van chocolade, beukenootjes,
rokerig. Geur van sigaretten-as.
Smaak: Prikkelende sherry suist omhoog... hout (bourbon?),
rokerigheid met zwavel. Honing en aardbeienkwark.
Afdronk: Rokerige sherry! Licht houtig met zoetig.
Vrij vol en romig, blijft heerlijk lang, kwark-achtig hangen.
Prikkeling van rokerigheid lost langzaam op en brengt zoetigheid.
Score: 8.5 uit 10.

Glengoyne 10 yrs

(Verjaardagscadeau van Philips Design collega's)

Kleur: Goud met geel randje
Neus: Boter-bloemen, boterbabbelaars, granny smiths (appels),
appelschillen, frissig als bij het openen van een fles Sinas.
Smaak: Zeer droog, eikenhouten 'ongelakte' vloer, licht zoetig,
enigszins vaille, fruitig. Winegums?
Afdronk: Zacht en droog. Heel houterig, vrij plezierig!
Droogheid en grassigheid zet nog vrij lang door en stopt vrij
mooi. Als een mooi gecomponeerd pianostuk.
Een zeer 'gelikte' Single Malt. Oprecht en eerlijk.

Glenfiddich Special Reserve, 12 yrs, 40%, 29,95

Kleur: Licht goud, barnsteen.
Neus: zoetig, grassig, notig, chocolade.
Smaak: rokerig en toffee-achtig.
Afdronk: een korte afdronk, blijft wel aanwezig maar is licht en
heeft iets weg van goedkope chocoladetoffees.
De leden vonden deze whisky bovendien geen echt uitgesproken
smaak hebben. Bijna blend-achtig.

Glenfiddich Toasted Oak Reserve, 12 yrs, 40%, 32,95

Kleur: Heel lichtgeel.
Neus: vanille, amandelen, een zacht briesje wind, fris.
Smaak: licht rokerig en houtig, rood fruit, vanillestokjes
die te lang hebben gelegen.
Afdronk: een medium-zoete afdronk met noten
(amandelen?) en een zuchtje rokerigheid.

Kleur: vol goud.
Neus: zoetig, vanille, snufje zeezout, sherry, hooi, licht fenolisch.
Smaak: zoutige zeewiertonen, turf, rokerig, notenhout, bittere
chocolade, zoethout, sigaren-as?
Afdronk: overduidelijk een lange rokerige afdronk, ziltig,
bitter en zoetig met een snufje gember.

Kleur: Donkergoud.
Neus: oude zweetsokken, muffig, mandarijntjes, sinaasappelschil.
Smaak: sherry, caramel, rozen, vruchtencompote, kaneel.
Afdronk: Een verwarmende zware lange afdronk, warme
chocoladesaus, de roze delen van Engelse drop, zoetig en lekker.

Glenfiddich Ancient Reserve, 18 yrs, 40%, 45,95

Kleur: lichtgoud.
Neus: muffig, lente-bloesem, sierbloemen, appelmoes.
Smaak: een zweepje kirsch, heide en rook, kersen, rood fruit en
chocoladeschaafsel. Niet iedereen proefde chocolade maar wel iets
dat aan dure toffees deed denken.
Afdronk: opnieuw lang en verwarmend, houtig en rokerig.

Kleur: amber.
Neus: honing, sherry, noten, een stoffige boekenkast, rokerig.
Smaak: chocolade-ijs met fijngehakte hazelnootjes en caramelsaus,
chipolata, kersen, vrij fruitig en zoet ook.
Afdronk: een medium afdronk, bitterzoet en rustgevend.

Neus: citrusfruit, heide en hooi.
Smaak: een explosie van tonen: zoetig, peren, accuzuur, kruidig.
Afdronk: een medium afdronk, blijft even aanwezig maar is (te)
licht en zoetig om echt een goede indruk achter te laten...
Score: 7 uit 10.

Glenrothes Vintage 1992, 12 yrs, 43%, 42,95

Kleur: Donker goud.
Neus: hele goedkope toffees, snoepgoed, hout, nootjes,
een hele zoete lollie.
Smaak: zoet en sappig het water loopt je direct in de mond
en weigert daarna snel te vertrekken.
Afdronk: Oh...? Erg kort! “Gone in a minute!”
Score: 6.5 uit 10.

Botteling van Signatory Vintage, vatnr: 16593, fles 623 van 864
South African Sherrybut

Kleur: Urine.
Neus: heide, honing, zee, strand en schelpen.
Smaak: onverwacht milde sherrytonen, fruitig en droog,
kleine tinteling van rook. Een elegante whisky, absoluut!
Afdronk: “Started great with a nice nose and first taste but
went down in flames very fast.”
Score: 7.5 uit 10.

Scapa, 14 yrs, 40%, 29,95

Kleur: Licht goud.
Neus: honing en rook.
Smaak: zoetig met hazelnoot, toffee tonen en licht rokerig.
Afdronk: meer honing en in de warme lange afdronk een toegift
met veel rokerigheid en een tikkeltje turf.
Score: 8.0 uit 10

Glenfarclas, 10 yrs, 40%, 27,95

Kleur: Goud. neus: zurig en rokerig, sherry, notig.
Neus: Sherry en rokerigheid... met noten?
Smaak: behoorlijke explosie van rokerigheid met op de
achtergrond wat zoetigheid van lekkere toffees.
Afdronk: Een heerlijk lange zoete, rokerige afdronk.
Het oordeel was unaniem: “Quality stuff!”

Kleur: Goud.
Neus: pure alcohol, biscuitjes.
Smaak: sterke koffie, zoete taart, bittere pure chocolade.
Afdronk: kort in de mond maar na een minuutje volgt een
bittere nasmaak die lijkt op gebakken aardappeltjes.

Isle of Arran, 10 yrs, 46%, 27,95

Kleur: Licht goud.
Neus: zeep, afwaswater, stoffig, goedkope parfum, limoen.
Smaak: een korte explosie van droogheid met fruit en nootjes.
Afdronk: lange droge afdronk met rook, ammonia en limoen.

Botteling van distilleerderij, vatnr: 525, fles 168 van 330

Kleur: Lichte urine.
Neus: koeienmest, kampvuur, houtskool.
De zus van Scott die marsepein eet?
Smaak: vuurwater, zeer rokerig, bittere chocolade,
“Laap Sang Souchang” een bepaalde thee-soort...
Afdronk: zeer plezierige lange afdronk met turf en rook
na een onwennige start.

Kleur: Koper, Vol goud.
Neus: Jodium, Engelse drop, zoutig, smeermiddel, anijs.
Smaak: Natte kranten, ziltig en turfachtig.
Zoute drop, bruidsuikers, autobanden.
Afdronk: Ziltig, zurig, peper en zout, mediumlange warme afdronk.

Kleur: Lichtgoud.
Neus: Sherry, rumbonen, sinaasappels, mandarijntjes, bittere chocolade,
eikenhouten vloer, afgewerkte olie.
Smaak: Zwaar, vol en vettig met rokerige sherrytonen.
Bekleedt de mond met sinaasappel, chocolade en een licht bittertje van het turf.
Afdronk: Hevig maar kort met een nasmaak van noga en bittere chocolade.

Botteling van 'van Wees' The Ultimate

Kleur: Chenin Blanc.
Neus: Dennenbos, bleekmiddel, accuzuur.
Smaak: Heel scherp met citrus en metalen. Vurig en branderig.
Droge biscuitjes, pannekoeken, stoffig en muf.
Afdronk: Vreselijk snel weg.
Score: 6 uit 10.

Talisker 18 yrs, 45.8%, Isle of Skye, Isles, 47,95

Kleur: Donkergoud.
Neus: Regen, eilanden, natte rotsen, hout, witte wijn,
piment van rookworst, bladgroenten.
Smaak: Tum Tummetjes, zacht als was, licht zoetige start.
Na enige tijd explosies van rode peper die gesmoord worden door
zoetig fruit of zacht zoetig snoepgoed. Subtiel rokerig en een lichte
turfsteek in de achtergrond.
Afdronk: Een knapperend haardvuur, warm en vol overgave.
Jodium, perzik, hout en zachte rokerige tonen die lang blijven hangen.

Kleur: Witte wijn.
Neus: Hoestdrank, zeewater, turf, jodium, ammonia.

Kleur: Lichtgoud.
Neus: Tabak, rook, zand, citroen of limoen, honing.
Smaak: Zacht fruit, licht gekruid, zoete appels, fudge en toffee.
Afdronk: Vrolijk en fruitig maar bijzonder kort. Zacht als satijn.
Score: 6.5 uit 10

Strathisla 12 yrs, 43%, 34,95

Kleur: Vol goud.
Neus: Sherry, zout, turf,
natte zeilkleding, prikkelend.
Smaak: Zacht maar vol. shortbread (spritsen), droog en licht rokerig.
Een beetje peper achterin de mond erbij.
Afdronk: Medium lange afdronk met verwarmende rokerige tonen.
Niet zo bijzonder als hij vaak wordt aangeprijsd in de lokale slijterij.
Beetje tegenvallend.

Bruichladdich Rocks Banyuls Finish, NAS, 46%, 34,95

Kleur: donkergoud/brons.
Neus: Nat hout, peper, varens, vanille, zoutig, benzine.
Smaak: Custard met peper en rood fruit.
Vriendelijk zoet en zacht met wat hout.
Een typische nasmaak van volle yogurt.
Afdronk: Zoet met bittere tannines van het Banyuls rode wijn vat.
Rode peper en kersen-snoep. Lang en warm.
Score: 7.5 uit 10

The Dalmore 12 yrs, 40%, 32,95

Kleur: Amber.
Neus: Sherry, fruitig, nectarines, zachte lichte rook, peper en zout.
Smaak: Kruidige heide met warme honing.
Zoetige rook met een tikkeltje sherry en pepers.
Een zoute hint achterin de mond.
Afdronk: Turf, honing en bloemen.
Zacht, zwaar, vol en verwarmend.
Score: 7.0 uit 10

telaar, vermoedelijk uit Zwitserland.

Botteling van Secret Treasures

Kleur: Vol goud/koper.
Neus: Flink gekruid, heide, jodium, natte rotsen, peperig en olie-achtig.
Autobanden, nieuwe condooms zo uit het pakje.
Smaak: Kleverig en kruidig, lichte peper en zoetig verwarmend.
Hints van sherry en Belgische gerookte salami.
Afdronk: Butterscotch siroop, kruidig, sherry, spek. Zeer lang!
Score: 8.0 uit 10

Glenfiddich 18 yrs, Speyside, 40%, 52,95

Kleur: Oud goud.
Neus: Hout en rozijnen, zoetig en kruidig, een doosje luxe bonbons,
caramel en nootjes met chocolade.
Smaak: Kruidig met witte peper, houtig en
notig met honing (gesuikerde pinda’s?), vrij droog maar ook zoetig
met tonen van sherry en turf.
Afdronk: Warm en zacht met flink wat bloemen en noten met honing.
Een lange warme en memorabele afdronk.
Een complexe whisky met “alles” wat lekker is.
Score: 8.5 uit 10

Mortlach 10 yrs, Port Finish, 43%, 42,95
Botteling van Chieftain's Choice

Kleur: Donkergoud.
Neus: Zee, rook, turf en hout, leren handschoenen.
Smaak: Start behoorlijk vurig en zet zijn tanden in je tandvlees!
Zwarte peper en kruiden, rood fruit, met ver in de achtergrond wat tannines van port/wijn. Afdronk: Droog met zoete kersen, rokerig met de bitterheid van rode wijn.
Een stevige afdronk (met zoethout?).
Score: 8.5 uit 10

Bowmore Legend, NAS, 40%, 21,95

Kleur: Lichtgoud.
Neus: Licht rokerig, wat turf, ammonia, een groot bos na een regenbui, zeezout.
Smaak: Intens rokerig en turfachtig.
Verwarmende sherrytonen op de achtergrond met zwarte tuinaarde, honing en aanmaak-limonade (?)
Afdronk: Zachte en zoete sherry-rokerigheid. Gelaagd en fris. Aarbeienkwark?

Welkom op ons eigen weblog. Op deze extra site zal ik zoveel mogelijk whiskies bespreken die ik persoonlijk geproefd heb. Dit was een onderdeel dat nog ontbrak op de clubsite. Via het blog kan ik u nog sneller van informatie voorzien!
